Gators: Kent's most common farm UTV

Work UTV or sport side-by-side?

You sit side by side in both, and there the likeness ends.

Farm and estate UTVs

A work UTV has a tipping bed and a tow hitch, and it's geared for a farm track. Its next owner looks at the hours first. Then the bed floor, then whether 4WD goes in. Scuffed plastics barely register.

Sport side-by-sides and buggies

These are built for fun. They have bucket seats and long-travel suspension and far more power than a work machine needs. Mods and crash history move the price much further than on a work UTV, and so does racing. Number plates and proof of ownership on a UTV

Most farm UTVs have never had a number plate. They've only ever worked on private land. We buy them on the original invoice or a dealer's receipt, or anything else that solidly proves the machine is yours.

Some Polaris Rangers and Can-Am Traxters are sold in the UK as tractor-homologated machines. Those come with a V5C. It should be in your name. If it isn't, show us how the machine came to you.

We check photo ID before we pay. Then the paperwork goes against the VIN stamped on the frame, and plated machines get exactly the same check. Lost the documents? A finance settlement letter or the dealer's records can often fill the gap.

Collecting from Weald vineyards and livery yards

We come to the UTV, wherever it's kept. Usually that means a farmyard or a barn. Sometimes it's a gateway at the end of a rutted track. The trailer has a winch for machines that won't drive on, and collection is on us throughout Kent, London and the South East, with UK-wide collection by arrangement.

Home for us is Kent. A lot of the UTVs we're asked about work on its estates and shoots. The Kent Weald has vineyards around Tenterden and Biddenden and horse yards in most villages, and between them they need small, tough machines for grape crates and hay bales. The UTV a vineyard replaces is often still sound.

UTVs that won't start or have rotted through

A UTV that won't start still has value in it. So does one with a seized engine or a bed that's rusted right through. The winch gets it on board. Here's how we buy non-running UTVs.
